Its been a busy few months...

http://www.sukimok.com/images/junemontage.jpg

Finished the music for Yellow Earth Theatre's 'Running the Silk Road' at the end of June, a few days before its first show at the Northern Stage in Newcastle. So far it has been very well received, receiving a 4 star review from the Guardian and selling out all its Barbican shows. Days later DJ Phat and I were doing our thing at 'The Social' as part of the Electronica category of the City Showcase event. A few days later I finished the music for a short play named Mr Whippendale which showcased at the Soho Theatre, which will soon also go on tour. I then had the pleasure of working with three incredible dancer/choreographers composing the music for an experimental dance exchange at Sadlers Wells during a two week residency. Next project... I will be working with a digital video artist composing the music for an installation/performance event in trafalgar sq in august. DJ Phat and I may also be doing a few performances around the UK as part of a series of BBC video nation... Keep an eye on this space...

Running the Silk Road

http://www.sukimok.com/images/silk.jpg

Currently working as composer and sound designer for a exciting new theatre production called Running the Silk Road. Heres some blurb...

A cast of UK and Chinese performers weave together two theatrical traditions in this enthralling collaboration.

In 2008, the year of the Beijing Olympics, a group of friends from London set off on an epic journey along the ancient Silk Road trading route to China. Armed only with good humour, they cross the isolated terrain of central Asia, carrying with them an alternative Olympic flame to represent the dangers of global warming.

The story of their journey is interwoven with tales from Chinese mythology. Classical actors from Beijing Opera draw on the zaju theatre of the Jin Dynasty, using dance, acrobatics, comic patter and music.

Yellow Earth is an award-winning East Asian theatre company based in the UK. It produces intercultural work that crosses art forms, boundaries and languages. Recent productions have been presented in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Chongqing, Northern Ireland, and as part of the RSC's Complete Works series in Stratford.

Written by Paul Sirett. Directed and conceived and produced by David Tse.

The show will be on tour around the UK from 27th May starting in Newcastle, ending at the Barbican on the 24th June.

See the Yellow Earth website for more details HERE See you there folks.

Hip hop collaboration with Dragon Tongue Squad & DJ Phat

http://www.sukimok.com/images/DTS.jpg

Following the great reception of our Scratch DJ/Spanish guitar set at the showcase months back, DJ Phat and I have recently been in talks with the Chinatown Arts Space, which is a great organisation founded with the sole objective to promote the development of East Asian performing and visual arts in London, about producing a collaborative project with China's foremost hip hop crew, Dragon Tongue Squad

The DTS will be flying over in early february for a week long residency where we will be working in the studio together to come up with a collaborative set to perform for two nights at the Linbury Theatre at the Royal Opera House 2 on the 21st and 22nd of February. We will be supported by a hip hop dance crew called blaZian - a mix of young exciting black and East Asian dancers, led by Johnny Ong.

Click HERE to buy tickets for the event. There are less than 400 tickets available for each night only, so don't wait too long! See you there.

City Showcase..... again!

 http://www.sukimok.com/images/cityshow.jpg

Received news from people at London City Showcase saying that they would like Kevin and I to perform again at next years City Showcase event. Not had much information about it yet, so I assume its provisional for now.

This time we will be playing in the main event and not the 'Oriental' category which is nice as obviously we would like to be recognised for our music and not be entered merely for our ethnicity. Although, in saying that, the oriental category is still a great opportunity to allow up and coming artists like us to have a chance to showcase our work. Watch this space for further developments!

New project

 http://www.sukimok.com/images/rthkmontageweb.jpg

Currently working on the music for an short independant film produced in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Whilst not exactly being an art house film, the story and imagery calls for a quite abstract score. With a mixture of latin and classical Baroque styles. Some excellent cinematography, story telling and acting from this up and coming director/producer. Watch this space.

Music Video Shoot

http://www.sukimok.com/images/videoshoot.jpg Lucky for me, a few mates are into film making/post-production and photography. So, armed with a miniscule budget, a free warehouse location and a truck load of self-belief we ventured into our first foray of MTV making. The video is for Kevin and my's scratch battle. We rented a broadcast quality DVcam and a few ARRI lighting rigs for the shoot. Everything else was improvised, from attaching a cam to a food trolley as a improvised dolly rig to climbing into the roof for a high level shot and filming from the sunroof of a little toyota yaris. Many thanks to Jas, Kee, Simon and Edward for all their hard work over the weekend. Simon is currently working hard on the editing and post-production so watch this space for the finished article.

The Bathroom Girl

http://www.sukimok.com/images/cherrystudio.jpg One of the acts at the showcase event I played at was Cherry Lee, or better known as 'TheBathroomGirl'. After the event we got to talking and decided to get together to do a few recordings of her songs in my studio. Apart from in her bathroom, at home, on a laptop, Cherry has never recorded professionally before. But she took to it like a fish to water. Take after take after take... we ended up recording five songs in one afternoon. So you could say shes one of those irritatingly talented people for whom recording and performance come as second nature. (sorry Cherry!) She's written some truly emotional and hear-felt songs that will no doubt pull at a few heart strings when they are released.

Check out the audio page to hear a couple of the acoustic recordings. I'll be working on some music for her songs while shes away for 2 months in Costa Rica working for the Women's Environmental Organisation.

Watch this space for more updates on her progress...

Radio Interview

http://www.sukimok.com/images/radioint.jpgKevin Quan and I were asked to attend a radio interview at the Spectrum 558AM radio station to talk about the city showcase and music in general. Joseph Wu was the presenter and the whole interview was conducted in cantonese, which tested both of our linguistic skills. We were actually on for the whole duration of the show; when we thought we were only going to be on for a few minutes. Interesting experience! Hopefully something can come out of the publicity.
